Pediatric Preventive Dentistry
First dental visit by the first birthday. Sealants before cavities. Habits corrected while they are still habits.
What this programme is
Almost every adult dental problem in India begins in childhood, and almost all of it was preventable. The interventions are cheap, quick and well-evidenced — they simply have to happen early.
The persistent myth we work hardest against is that milk teeth do not matter because they fall out. They hold space for the adult set, they shape speech, and an abscess in one is exactly as painful as in any other tooth.
Every time we run it
- Guidance for parents from the first tooth — cleaning, bottle habits and what sugar frequency actually does
- Pit-and-fissure sealants on permanent molars, the single highest-value preventive procedure in childhood
- Fluoride varnish where indicated
- Diet counselling focused on frequency rather than quantity of sugar
- Habit correction: thumb-sucking, mouth breathing, nail biting, bottle at bedtime
- Early orthodontic assessment so timing decisions are made deliberately, not late
Three main hosts
Infants & toddlers (0–3)
Parent-facing. Cleaning from the first tooth, first visit by the first birthday.
Young children (4–8)
The sealant and habit-correction window, and where school screening does the most good.
Pre-teens (9–12)
Permanent molars in, orthodontic timing assessed, and independence in brushing established.
Four steps on the ground
Meet them where they are
School camps, anganwadis and community camps — not a clinic waiting room.
Make it not frightening
A child's first dental experience predicts the next thirty years of attendance. We take that seriously.
Treat the parent too
The behaviour we need to change is usually the parent's, not the child's.
Track annually
The same child, screened yearly, so change is visible rather than assumed.
